What is a Legal Paraprofessional?
In Arizona, a Legal Paraprofessional (LP) is a licensed professional authorized to provide legal services in certain areas, similar to a nurse practitioner in the medical field. Unlike paralegals who, in Arizona, cannot represent clients in court.
Here’s a breakdown of key points:
Licensed: LPs are licensed by the Arizona Supreme Court, similar to attorneys. This means they meet specific education and experience requirements.
Limited Practice: LPs can provide legal services in authorized areas like family law, civil law (limited jurisdiction), and potentially upcoming areas like juvenile dependency law and adoptions.
Independent Practice: LPs can offer legal advice, represent clients in court within their area of practice, and handle other legal tasks without direct attorney supervision.
For more information on LPs in Arizona, you can refer to the Arizona Judicial Branch website https://www.azcourts.gov/cld/Legal-Paraprofessional.
